A female kingfisher repeatedly strikes larger fish against a branch to kill it before devouring it or flying off to feed young in the nest. Kingfishers always swallow their prey head first, it aids ingestion by helping prevent scales and fins getting caught in the oesophagus.

The kingfishers nictitating membrane (translucent third eyelid) is also closed to protect the eye from water while maintaining vision.
