Alan Hewitt Wildlife Photographer - Male Lion

I’m Alan Hewitt wildlife photographer and photography safari leader specialising in ethical and sustainable photography safaris in sub-Saharan Africa.

Wildlife photography isn’t just about capturing an image. For me, it’s about understanding the context in which it exists. I like photographing wildlife in a way which reflects the behaviour and interactions of species within their habitat. It offers a glimpse into the dynamics of the natural world.

I combine technical expertise with fieldcraft knowledge to offer guests meaningful encounters and world-class photographic guidance, in remote wildlife locations.

From 2020 through to 2023 I was honoured to be an Official FUJIFILM X-Photographer and I continue to work with the UK team in an ambassador role.

Alongside my own work, I am a director and private safari guide with African Photography Safaris, leading immersive photography safaris and sharing my passion and expertise, and I also work with Penda Photo Tours.

Framing the Wild – Back-lit Lioness

13 Apr 2026

This shot is all about a minimalist, graphic approach. Rather than lighting the lioness’ face to reveal detail, it does the exact opposite. Most of the frame is deep shadow, with the backlighting catching just the edges of her fur to define the shape of the head.
